Wir gratulieren Prof. Amitai Etzioni sehr herzlich zur zweifachen Auszeichnung: Die wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultät verlieh ihm am 8.12.2009 die Ehrendoktorwürde der Universität zu Köln. Am darauffolgenden Tag wurde Prof. Etzioni mit dem renommierten Meister Eckart Preis der Identity Foundation und der Universität zu Köln ausgezeichnet.
Der Preisträger
Amitai Etzioni wurde 1929 in Köln geboren und hieß ursprünglich Werner Falk. 1936 floh seine Familie vor den Nazis nach Palästina, wo er seinen heutigen Namen erhielt. Der Wissenschaftler ist inzwischen amerikanischer Staatsbürger und lehrte 20 Jahre Soziologie an der Columbia University in New York. Seit 1980 ist er Direktor des Institute for Communitarian Policy Studies an der George Washington University in Washington D.C. Er war Berater der amerikanischen Regierung und ist international vor allem durch sein Modell einer auf selbstbestimmtem und zugleich solidarischem Handeln basierenden Verantwortungsgesellschaft bekannt geworden. 1990 gründete Amitai Etzioni „The Communitarian Network“, eine gemeinnützige Organisation zur Förderung der moralischen, sozialen und politischen Basis der Gesellschaft. Seitdem wird Etzioni oft als der wichtigste Vorreiter der kommunitaristischen Bewegung bezeichnet und gilt als einer ihrer bekanntesten geistigen Väter.
Der Meister Eckhart Preis
Der Meister Eckhart Preis ist nach dem gleichnamigen Prediger, Prior und Professor benannt, der zwischen 1260 und 1328 lebte. Meister Eckhart lebte und lehrte vor allem in Erfurt, Köln, Paris und Straßburg. Der Dominikaner Eckhart gilt als der führende Kopf der deutschen Mystik. Der mit 50.000 € dotierte Meister Eckhart Preis wird seit 2001 im Turnus von zwei Jahren von der Identity Foundation vergeben – einer 1998 gegründeten gemeinnützigen Wissenschaftsstiftung. Ziel ist es, die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Identität in der meinungsbildenden Öffentlichkeit zu fördern. Geehrt werden Persönlichkeiten, die in ihren Arbeiten existentielle Fragen der persönlichen, sozialen und interkulturellen Identität aufgreifen und durch ihr Wirken einen breiten öffentlichen und internationalen Diskurs beleben. Seit 2007 wird der Preis gemeinsam mit der Universität zu Köln verliehen.

A spezial letter of congratulations from the „Kölner Freiwilligen Agentur“
Dear Professor Etzioni,
it is with great joy and pride that we join the many admirers of your academic achievements and followers of your communitarian projects in congratulating you for receiving the prestigious “Meister-Eckardt” award from the Identity Foundation in collaboration with the University of Cologne. We also congratulate you to the honorable doctorship which was bestowed on you by the University of Cologne. We, the members of the “Kölner Freiwilligen Agentur” (volunteer centre of Cologne), have a special reason to address you on this occasion. You are in some respect the godfather of our volunteer organisation. It was you who gave some of our founders the first impulse to get started on some kind of communitarian endeavour. When you visited Cologne in the early Nineties, when you had just started your “Communitarian Network” in the United States, you suggested to some of us to spread this idea here in Germany, too, and open a chapter of the Network on our own. At first it seemed an impossible and somewhat awkward idea, because at that time in Germany the idea of volunteerism was not very much accepted. The European tradition is quite different from the American political culture, where voluntary associations are quite literally the backbone of society.
But after some hesitation we started to work on this project and produced a “Communitarian Manifesto” for the German society. After that we decided to break this general theme down to the local level and make it much more concrete in terms of what communitarianism means if you apply it to day-today life in a community like Cologne. We discussed this in a small group for about a year and produced the “Kölner Kommunitaristisches Manifest” and called ourselves the “Kölner Kommunitaristen“. After finishing work on this paper we were a little bit at a loss how to go forward from here. We wanted to implement these ideas or at least to introduce their spirit into the society of our hometown. After some deliberation we decided to found a “Freiwilligen Agentur”, which would bring together people who are interested in voluntary work with social-oriented institutions and organizations which needed volunteer work. Beyond this practical aspect we wanted the “Freiwilligen-Agentur” also to make people not only aware of the need for voluntary work in a democratic society but also of the joy and the deep satisfaction which voluntary work can provide for people who are looking for a sense in their life. We found other activists who came from a different political background but had the same ideas as we, and together we started the long and uphill road to establishing a “Freiwilligen Agentur” in Cologne – in the beginning completely on the basis of voluntary engagement. When it took off and enlarged it was obvious it could not go on and thrive without professional help, so we slowly built up a staff of devoted employees who helped to organize and manage this by now quite large and very successful organization.
Two years ago we celebrated our tenth anniversary. We manage now beyond the core task of bringing together volunteers with institutions and organizations a large list of different activities, for instance exchange of volunteers with our international sister cities, corporate volunteering, organizing reading and reciting literature in classrooms, adult education centers etc. There are by now eleven different activities within the Kölner Freiwilligen Agentur. And it all started with an initiative which was stimulated by the communitarian spirit. Therefore we feel a special relationship to you.
